At this year's conference, the association presented awards to several members. The J. Paul Melanson Award for service to the campus card industry was presented to Mel Blackburn of Loyola College of Maryland. Mr. Blackburn has was a founding board member of NACCU and helped pilot one of the countries first smart card projects on a college campus. He continues to be active in the campus card industry and often speaks on its behalf. This is only the second time the J. Paul Melanson Award has been issued.

For the first time, NACCU presented awards for Best Card Design and Best Marketing Materials. Members submitted copies of their campus cards and samples of their marketing materials. These materials were mounted and displayed in the exhibit hall at the conference. All registered participants recieved voting cards for the two displays. Members voted by secret ballot at the displays and the awards were presented to the winning schools at the awards banquet. University of Minnesota defeated 24 other cards and won Best Card Design and University of Arizona's CatCard bested 21 other entries to win Best Marketing Materials. NACCU will continue this contest in the future and will soon post copies of all card entries on our website.

Among the other winners at the conference were Ronald J. Skutnick of University of Scranton and Dick Scholfield of Wellesley College who each received a free registration to our 1999 Conference in Orlando, Florida. Phil Piet of Northern Arizona University received the nod for Most Outrageous Resort Wear for his outfit at the Polynesian Luau. Other prizes were exchanged at the awards luncheon and NACCU would like to thank all of those who contributed.
