The History of NACCU |

|
Their vision was to create an organization with the purpose of educating college and university administrators charged with the responsibility for developing card systems by apprising them of newly installed applications, vendor performance, technology platforms, and other matters relating to the marketplace for card systems. NACCU was also planned to function as a resource library for the latest advances in campus card technologies. The first Board meeting was held on May 6, 1993 at Duke University. The quarterly newsletter, then titled simply “NACCU News” was published in July 1993. It included a campus card glossary and a beginner’s FAQ about campus cards. The first annual conference was held in February 1994 with the goal to help universities make initial decisions associated with the transition to a card program. At the time of the first conference, membership was up to 150 institutions and the conference drew 255 institutional and corporate attendees. Founder Joe Pietrantoni said “What this conference has done is teach universities about meanings of on-line, off-line, smart card, hardware, software. It’s been a good education for everyone.” Xavier University’s Tom Barlow was added as a sixth Board member at the first conference. NACCU launched the NACCU-L listserv in March 1994 as a resource for institutional members to be able to ask questions and communicate with other members. The Corporate Associate membership category was added in July 1994. As interest in campus cards grew, so did interest in NACCU. In February 1995, On-Campus Hospitality magazine said of NACCU, “The sheer growth of the campus card in the last few years has attributed a great deal to this fledgling association. The networking and interchanging of ideas that are afforded by NACCU are unmatched.” In March of 1995, the 2nd annual conference drew 234 institutional representatives and over 21 exhibitors. The conference featured 10 special interest sessions and two general sessions. J. Paul Melanson resigned his position as President and Executive Director in May 1995 due to health reasons, and Tom Bell was elected as President. Kathleen Payne and John Spaldo joined the Board, and Kevin Mullen was hired as Administrator for the National Office, which moved to Durham, North Carolina. The third annual conference included “Basic”, “General Interest”, and “Advanced or Special Interest” topic tracks. Mel Blackburn retired from the Board. The NACCU Board presented a special award to founder J. Paul Melanson, and the J. Paul Melanson Award became a part of NACCU tradition. The award is given to members of the college and university community and campus card corporate members who have spurred the growth of the campus card industry, been pioneers in campus cards, significantly and freely helped NACCU members to implement or advance systems on their campuses, or been instrumental in the growth and stability of NACCU. NACCU drove onto the information highway in March 1996 and NACCU Web was born. The initial Web site included membership information, upcoming conferences, and a membership directory. NACCU members also began receiving Campus ID Report, the predecessor to CR80 News, as a supplement to the NACCU News. In June 1996, NACCU institutional membership grew to 200. The fourth annual conference welcomed the addition of a corporate presentation track. In June 1997, NACCU News became CARDtalk, and was published monthly rather than quarterly. The premier issue announced two new Board members – Linda Hall and Gary Meszaros. June brought another important change when Lyn White joined as the new Executive Director. NACCU hosted its first workshop on October 18, 1997 at Duke University. Forty-three attendees learned how to plan and operate a campus card program. In December 1997, the current NACCU “World of Possibilities” logo was created. The 5th annual conference had record attendance with 495 full registrations. The conference featured the addition of the now popular Best Card and Best Marketing Awards. Three additional Board members were elected at the conference: Cindy Vetter, Arthur Gallagher, and Mark Kuchefski, and John Spaldo resigned from the Board. The J. Paul Melanson Award was presented to NACCU Founder Mel Blackburn. The second NACCU Workshop, “Campus Card Technology – Learning the Nuts-N-Bolts of Equipment, Software and Systems” was held at Xavier University from May 31 – June 1, 1998. The third workshop was titled “Marketing Strategy for Your Campus Card Program” and was held at the University of Northern Colorado from October 11 – 12, 1998. Also in October 1998, the Member Resources section of the Web site was updated with RFPs, Policy Manuals, Mission Statements, and Regulation E information. 1999 started with a Winter Workshop in Miami, Florida on January 6 – 7, which was sponsored jointly by NACUBO, NACAS, and NACCU. The Newcomers Reception was introduced at the 6th annual conference. 360 attendees enjoyed the conference. Five Board members retired: Kathleen Payne, Linda Hall, Tom Barlow, Tom Bell, and Joe Pietrantoni. The Board added Phil Piet, Dianna Norwood, Larry Maguire, Shirley Everson, and Ron Pierce. In the summer of 1999, Kevin Mullen left NACCU and Office Assistant Glenda King was hired. The position of Publications Editor was created and filled by Leslie Pardue. Two more “Nuts & Bolts” workshops took place, one at October 24 -25 at Northeastern University and the other November 5 – 6 at California State University Fullerton. Nominations for the first Professional Development Award occurred in October 1999. It was created as an annual award to recognize individuals who had made significant contributions to the card industry. In December, Gary Stone replaced Glenda King as Office Manager. At the 7th annual conference, Larry Maguire retired from the Board and John Beckwith was elected. After the conference, Phil Piet left the Board and was replaced by Tom Barlow who agreed to fill a two-year term. NACCU founder Joe Pietrantoni was the first recipient of the Professional Development Award. The 2000 conference also marked the beginning of many of the current presentation tracks, featuring topics categorized by Technology, Business, Marketing, Studies in Success, and Innovations in Card Uses and Systems. In July 2000, CARDtalk went high-tech as it was published electronically for the first time. The corporate profiles were also added to the NACCU Web site. Lyn White and Leslie Pardue left NACCU and Ron Pierce took over as Executive Director in August 2000. The National Office moved to Troy, Alabama, and Pat Faulkinberry and Margaret Bemis joined the National Office staff as Business Manager and Publications Editor, respectively. NACCU co-hosted a workshop with NACUBO in Atlanta from December 6 – 8, 2000, and worked with NACUBO to publish a book, “Campus Cards: Making an Informed Decision”. As 2000 ended, Ronda Snyder joined the NACCU staff as Associate Director of Marketing and Development, and the Press Release section was added to the NACCU Web site. The 8th annual conference featured online registration for the first time, and 191 of the attendees registered via the Web. The J. Paul Melanson Award was presented to NACCU Founders Joe Pietrantoni, Tom Bell, and Bill Norwood. In May 2001, NACCU Institutional membership reached 400. Ronda Snyder left the National Office, and was replaced by Debra Kelley. The Web Profile Project made its debut in January 2002. The project was implemented as a benchmarking survey. The addition of an archive of Listserv discussions was also added to the web. “Sales Pitch Sunday” premiered at the 9th annual conference, giving NACCU Corporate Associate members the opportunity to “pitch” their products and services to conference attendees. Jane Barrantes joined the Board to replace Tom Barlow. On July 25-27, 2002, NACCU, NACAS, and CR80News held a workshop in Burlington, Vermont entitled “Beyond the Basics: The Evolution of the Campus Card to an Added Value Instrument”. In September 2002, Margaret Bemis left NACCU and was replaced by Kevin Pearcey. In October, Honda Federal Credit Union joined as the first Business Member. Subscription to CR80 News became a benefit to NACCU membership in January 2003. The 10th annual conference marked the retirement of Board member Gary Meszaros and Kathleen Kelly was elected to join the Board. On May 1-2, 2003, NACCU, NACAS, and CR80News held a workshop in Sanibel Island, Florida entitled “Beyond the Basics: Your Campus Card as a Management Tool”. In July 2003, Dale Witenhafer was appointed as a ninth member to the Board. In September, Ron Pierce stepped down from his position as Executive Director and Debra Kelley left NACCU as well. Lowell Adkins was named as the new Executive Director in March 2004 just in time for the 11th annual conference. The Board saw some big changes as well, as Art Gallagher, Mark Kuchefski, and Cindy Vetter retired and Charlie Giles and Gerald Inman were elected. Gerald resigned in April and was replaced by Doug Vanderpoel. In August 2004, the National Office moved to its current location in Phoenix, Arizona. Jenny Weisman joined the National Office staff as Business Manager. In November, Dale Witenhafer resigned from the Board and was replaced by Joyce Sealey. NACCU co-hosted a workshop with NACAS and CCBO from November 14 – 16 in Scottsdale, Arizona. Kara Philp was hired as Publications Editor in December 2004. The 12th annual conference featured the Disney Institute Workshop “Innovation in Action”, 32 breakout sessions, User Group and Regional Meetings, Table Topic Discussions, and record attendance. Shirley Everson and Dianna Norwood retired from the Board and Jeanine Brooks and Bob Mask were elected. The NACCU Board and Staff continued attending conferences of other associations including CHEMA, NACAS, NACUBO, and ECCA. In April 2005, NACCU members began receiving a complimentary subscription to AVISIAN’s Regarding ID magazine as part of their membership benefits. Kara Philp left NACCU in June 2005 and was replaced by Crystal Bazarnic as Publications Editor in July. Jenny also stepped down from her position and Janet Gale was brought on as Business Manager, first in a temporary capacity then hired permanently in November 2005. The NACCU Web site continued to evolve with the addition of an archive of card designs and a redesign of the Member Resources area. A new “Security” topic track was unveiled at the 13th annual conference in San Diego, and NACCU hosted its first “Fun Run” and produced a photo directory of attendees on site – possibly the start of new traditions. The conference again had record attendance, surpassing the record from the prior year. John Beckwith retired from the NACCU Board and Joel Weidner was elected. Janet Gale left NACCU in February 2007. The 14th annual conference in Atlanta once again had record attendance. Jane Barrantes and Doug Vanderpoel retired from the Board and Jorrun Liston and John Younk were elected. The J. Paul Melanson Award was presented to NACCU Executive Director Lowell Adkins. Roxanne Jordan joined NACCU as Business Manager in May 2007. Jorrun Liston retired from the Board and in June 2007, joined the NACCU staff in the newly created position of Education Manager. Currently, the Board and staff of NACCU are strong and the organization is looking toward the future, where it will continue to develop further resources and educational opportunities for its growing membership.
