Blackboard Appoints Jeff Staples Director of Marketing for the Blackboard Commerce Suite Division

Avisian Co-Founder, Staples Brings Industry Expertise to Role

Washington, DC – October 23, 2006 – Blackboard Inc. (NASDAQ: BBBB), a leading provider of enterprise technology and services to educational institutions, today announces Jeff Staples will join the Blackboard Commerce division as director of marketing. In this new role,  Mr. Staples will oversee all marketing efforts for the Blackboard Commerce Suite™, a package of three enterprise software applications supporting cashless transactions on-campus, off-campus and online and allowing for identification and security access.  He will work closely with Blackboard clients and members of the Blackboard Commerce team to enhance communication between the two groups, research existing and forthcoming trends in the market to help shape Blackboard’s products, and deliver presentations at Blackboard and industry conferences.

Mr. Staples joins Blackboard from Avisian Publishing, a company he co-founded, and is recognized as a leading industry source for information related to ID technology. He brings more than fifteen years of experience working in the field of ID technology, with experience in higher education, commercial and Federal government sectors.

Throughout his career, Mr. Staples has gained a deep understanding of advanced ID technologies and applications including payment, physical and logical security, and secure authentication.  He began his career with the Florida State University FSUCard program, and was part of the team that founded the FSU Card Application Technology Center.   In this role, he assisted in the development of one of the first fully-integrated, multi-application ID card programs in the world combining financial, telecommunications, and administrative applications. Mr. Staples currently serves on the Advisory Board of the RFID and Privacy Public Information Center at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).  He is an avid runner and active community volunteer. He resides in Aldie, Virginia with his wife and two children.
