E-CARD completes city-wide implementation of transit U-Pass distribution system

Seven major post-secondary institutions in British Columbia (including Vancouver Community College, Simon Fraser University and the University of British Columbia) have implemented a solution from E-CARD that enables students to collect a monthly Universal Transit Pass (U-Pass) in a secure and automated process.

Each month, a student will swipe their student card at a U-Pass Dispenser located at various points within a campus, and receive their U-Pass for the month.  The entire student verification process takes less than a second in most cases.  Using E-CARD’s online campus solution, the Dispenser passes the card number through to the main server for eligibility confirmation.  A record is then made in the student file that they have picked up their card for that month, and it prevents them from retrieving another U-Pass until next month.

“Students love it and in most cases are stunned at how quick they can get their U-Pass without lining up” says Ben Guanzon, IT Director at Vancouver Community College (VCC). “We implemented five machines throughout the campus and there has never been a line up on any of the machines”.  VCC has been successfully running the new Dispenser system since February 2011.  The entire burden of U-Pass distribution has shifted from a manual to an automated process, saving thousands of hours of labour each year.

On the first day of operation at 6 other institutions in late August, over 12,000 U-Passes were issued without incident, and the entire process is secured by the Dispenser box plus a complete audit trail of each transaction.  It is estimated that approximately 80,000 students per month will retrieve U-Passes in this method.
