NACCU New Member Highlight:
Alcatraz

In this latest installment of our New Member Highlight, we catch up with Adrien Julienne, Director of Marketing with new NACCU member, Alcatraz.
Talk about the history of your company.
Alcatraz was founded to revolutionize access control by leveraging the unique power of the human face and artificial intelligence. Headquartered in Cupertino, California, and manufactured in the U.S. in Plano, Texas, we are led by experts in identity, security, and enterprise technology.
From the beginning, our mission has been to accelerate the global adoption of facial identity as the credential of choice for access control. Today, we protect more than 4 million employees worldwide and are trusted by hyperscale data centers, AI leaders, and Fortune 500 organizations. We pioneered Facial Authentication as a Service (FAaaS), delivering continuous software innovation so customers remain future-ready without needing to rip and replace hardware.
What does your company do?
Alcatraz helps higher education institutions modernize campus access with secure, fast, and privacy-first facial authentication. We replace or enhance traditional credentials such as badges, fobs, and PINs with secure, privacy-forward facial authentication.
Our platform delivers three core outcomes:
• Security – Prevents unauthorized access and reduces tailgating.
• Convenience – Enables frictionless authentication at walking speed.
• Privacy – Designed to meet biometric privacy regulations such as BIPA, CCPA, and GDPR.
We make security invisible—no cards, no codes, just you.
What products and services do you provide specifically to campus card operations?
For campus card and campus security teams, we provide:
Rock X Facial Authentication Device
- Works natively with existing Access Control Systems (Wiegand/OSDP).
- Multi-factor authentication ready (badge + face, if desired).
- 4-in-1 functionality:
- Facial authentication
- Tailgating detection
- ONVIF video stream to existing VMS
- SIP intercom
(Reduces infrastructure complexity and cost.)
Campus-Specific Use Cases
- Securing residence halls and restricted dorm access
- Research labs and high-security facilities
- Athletic facilities and performance centers
- Data centers and IT rooms
- Administrative offices and HR-sensitive areas
- After-hours building access control
Operational Benefits for Campus Card Offices
- Thousands of users can be enrolled quickly.
- Reduces lost, shared, or stolen card risk.
- Enhances 2FA at the speed of 1FA.
- Provides analytics and reporting for access behavior.
- Supports hybrid campus environments where tracking authorized presence matters.
We also offer cloud-first or on-prem deployment options through our FAaaS model, ensuring campuses stay updated as AI and compliance requirements evolve.
Is there a new product or service you want to tell us about?
Our continued innovation centers around our Facial Authentication as a Service (FAaaS) platform.
Unlike legacy biometric hardware that becomes outdated, our solution continuously improves through software updates—whether deployed in the cloud or on-prem. This means campuses don’t have to worry about buying a system that’s frozen in time.
Additionally, Rock X’s edge-based AI processing ensures authentication happens locally, and facial data is converted into encrypted “data blobs” that cannot be reconstructed into an image. No personally identifiable information is stored in the Alcatraz platform—an important differentiator for higher education legal and compliance teams. In short: future-ready security, built with privacy at its core.
What are you hoping to gain from your NACCU membership?
Through our membership, we hope to:
- Collaborate with campus card professionals navigating the shift from physical credentials to digital and biometric identity.
- Support campuses looking to enhance security without compromising student experience.
- Contribute thought leadership around privacy-first biometrics and compliance.
- Build long-term partnerships with institutions focused on innovation, safety, and operational efficiency.
Higher education environments demand security, convenience, and privacy in equal measure—and we look forward to partnering with NACCU members to help make campuses safer while delivering a seamless, modern access experience.
