What Campus Card Staff See and Why It Matters

As campus card professionals, we work where identity, access, technology, and the student experience come together. Because our work touches nearly every square inch of our institutions, we develop a uniquely comprehensive view of how a campus actually functions. We connect systems, people, and processes in ways few other departments can.
When it comes to making the case for the strategic value of campus credential programs, this macro-perspective is our superpower. Rather than seeing isolated requests, campus card teams see the bigger picture emerge across the entire institution.
The Convergence of Campus Life
While many departments hold individual pieces of the institutional puzzle, the card office is where they all converge. Our teams seamlessly manage:
- The Student Journey: We are a trusted compass for students navigating orientation, meal plans, residence halls, recreation access, and campus events. We are often the friendly face that helps students find their way when they feel lost.
- Operational Coordination: We understand how campus systems interconnect. From resolving hardware and software glitches to smoothing out departmental processes, we routinely identify and fix inefficiencies that others can't see in isolation.
- Access and Security: From managing complex door schedules to partnering with Public Safety and handling sensitive HR offboarding requests, we ensure that campus access is accurate, timely, and secure.
Our work allows the campus community to function effortlessly, often without anyone realizing the massive level of coordination taking place behind the scenes.
High-Touch Service in a High-Tech World
Importantly, our role extends far beyond transactions and systems. Campus credential offices are among the most approachable, low-pressure spaces on campus, creating unique opportunities for meaningful human interaction.
Courtney Petrizzi from the University of Alabama captures this beautifully:
"Students come in frustrated, locked out, overwhelmed, embarrassed, and stressed. And because the interaction feels practical rather than administrative, students sometimes open up unexpectedly. A student replacing a lost ID might actually need directions, reassurance, or someone willing to calmly solve a problem when their day is unraveling."
The Stewards of Institutional Data
Behind every warm human interaction is a robust, carefully maintained data ecosystem. We aren’t just issuing physical cards or mobile credentials; we are sustaining the data integrity that powers the entire university.
Bernie Moreno from the University of Southern California describes it as a vital digital infrastructure:
"Data is everything. The ability to get stable data in and put stable data out flows like fresh water… The university community never has to think twice about the data they see. Most of them may not know it comes from USCard."
Whether it is proximity access, NFC, barcodes, or visual identification, these technologies only work seamlessly because of our underlying data stewardship. We connect an individual to their institutional identity, ensuring students, faculty, and affiliates are accurately represented across every connected system. Few other departments operate with that level of reach.
Insights Grounded in Reality
This combination of direct service and technical stewardship gives campus card professionals an unmatched vantage point. As Courtney highlights, credential teams are often the first to know:
- When students are actually on campus and how physical spaces are truly being used.
- Where operational bottlenecks and friction exist between technology and people.
- Which systems students struggle with most.
- What emergencies reveal about infrastructure gaps.
- How institutional policy changes impact real users in real time.
These insights aren't theoretical, but are are grounded in our daily interactions. When we spot recurring access issues, we are identifying configuration gaps. When we uncover vulnerabilities in emergency protocols, we are protecting our communities.
More Than a Card
Ultimately, campus card professionals do far more than manage credentials. We manage the connections between people, places, data, and systems. We ensure that identity flows securely, efficiently, and compassionately across our institutions.
The next time you issue a credential or troubleshoot a reader, remember: you aren't just completing a task. You are enabling the daily campus experience and driving the long-term success of your institution.
